Business Case Qbian

Qbian b.v., a firm established in
Gent Belgium, is specialised in the development and organisation of
courses for retail personnel. An important part of its customers are
telecommuncations retailers for whom Qbian organizes hands-on courses
throughout the whole world. In these courses telecommunication equipment
is used which is specially shipped to the place where the course is held.
The goal of the project is to give access to the
server based stock management system of telecommunication equipment using
a Nokia Communicator 9500. The released product is used by personnel of
Qbian to manage the telecom equipment but it also serves as training
material for IT consultants trained by Qbian.
The target was to establish a client software
solution within two months in C++ for the Nokia Communicator 9500, which
is a Symbian based smart phone/ handheld computer.
How the goal was reached.
After discussing the requirements
with the customer for several times and after final sign off of the
specification by the customer the solution is developed in close
cooperation with an employee of Qbian, who is responsible for the server
software.
The complete solution consisted not
only of the client software but also of the HTTPS software on the server
and the interface with the stock management system on the server.
Communication with the server takes
place by using GSM, GPRS and Wlan.
The solution is after an integration and acceptance
test accepted by the customer and is now fully operational.
The result
The result of the produced solution is the
possibility to manage the stock of telecommunications equipment with the
use of a smartphone. This make it possible for employees of Qbian to
schedule shipments and to monitor shipped goods with the use of a
smartphone independent of the place they are. The solution is also used as
training material in the courses given to IT consultants. It gives a real
demonstration of the business use of a smartphone.
